“All art is unconscious”
KandinskyI am intrigued by how light, color and space are constantly changing and growing and how the foot-prints and scars of experience remain ever present. I have always been curious about what is inside, to take things apart and see how pieces and layers fit together and resonate.
As an artist and psychoanalyst I am steeped in the art of metaphor. I look for what is seen and not seen, how surface and depth, the conscious and unconscious affect each other, coexist, and are interwoven to form a whole. I find myself thinking on several levels at once with the ideas of growth and destruction.
When I approach the canvas I start with a loose idea, playing with color, shape and line. I make a mess and then simplify. I let my unconscious and free association drive me, waiting for the image to show itself. My process alternates between losing myself in the flow and standing back with a critical eye. I want to create a synthesis and history of observation, sensation and experience of a moment in time.

H
Janet, I took a whim to look for you on Google and here you are. Perhaps I’m feeling nostalgic since there have been several recent deaths among friends here in Indiana. I see by your bio that you’ve been both busy as well as over educated. Good for you.
I have an old website in great need of updating, since it is at least 15 years old now at Jack brubaker.com. I’ve also set up a print shop in recent years and have had some sucess marketing prints along with my ironwork. Nothing exciting. Mostly views in my woods. Ran into Robert Marx a few years ago and he still had the bright, twinkling eyes. He has been printing letterpress with his etchings so we shared stories of old letterpress equipment we enjoy. I still have one long time employee who comes in to keep some hot iron going out the doors though I now spend most all my time building a wood and epoxy boat to take on extended sailing trips.
It would be a pleasure to run into you and see more of your good work someday.
Well we obviously thought
Hi Janet.. very impressed with your work and was surprised to learn about your Psychoanalysis background..
Your work initially brought me to thinking about Willem De Kooning.. and, in my head, I mixed that with Mondrian stuff. A bit of a mind adventure.. then I looked up those two to see how and why they connected.
